POST OFFICE DIRECTORY 1847 ROTHWELL

ROTHWELL is a parish and market-town, distant 4 miles north-west of Kettering, and 79 miles from London, in the Hundred of Rothwell, and diocese of Peterborough. The living is a vicarage, with Orton annexed, value £109, in the gift of W.T. Smyth, Esq., and others; the Rev. Allan Macpherson, M.A., is the present incumbent.

The church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, is a fine ancient structure, with a tower, in the early style of English architecture. Under the south aisle of the church is a vault or chancel house, discovered about 150 years ago, containing the bones of many thousand persons, stacked in order, some of which are immensely large, but no account can be given how they come there.

Here is a fair on Trinity Monday for stock and pedlary; market days on Mondays for grain.

Here are an Independent and Wesleyan chapels, also a Free Grammar, National and British School.

The population in 1841, was 2,305; the parish contains 3,576 acres 34 poles. Thomas Phillip Maunsell, Esq., M.P. is lord of the manor.

There are six almshouses for six widows, which are kept in repair by rent from some land in the said parish. Here is an hospital, called Jesus Hospital, founded by Owen Ragsdale, Gent., in which contain 26 widowers, clothes and allowed 6s. per week, 2 matrons, and a principal, or governor.

Here is a very ancient market house in a good state of preservation, though never been finished, around which is the coats of arms of a great number of nobility, then living in the county of Northampton; it was built by Thomas Tresham in the year 1507, and is a fine specimen of ancient architecture.
