Mary and Thomas Smith were siblings, the children of Joseph Marlow and his first wife Hannah Randall.

Mary was born about 1839 at Whetstone in Leicestershire.

Thomas was born about 1848, also at Whetstone. In 1876 Thomas married Elizabeth Ann Wright. By 1901 the couple were living at Desborough. The 1911 census shows that they had had three children; two still living. Mary was living with them by this date.
