PUTTING ON THE SCREW
Putting on the Screw.—On Monday, Mr. Loake of Harborough, sent a
man to Desborough on an errand, and told him he might call at
Mr. Wilford's, who
keeps a public house and rents a close of Mr. Loake, to have some ale, and he
would pay for it. He called and had a pint of ale; but Wilford said he would
neither trust him nor Mr. Loake. The man had but twopence halfpenny which he
gave him, but he would not let him leave the house without having something as a
pledge for the half-penny, he therefore left his coat and walked to Harborough,
six miles without it.
