Retirement, January 1899
Desborough is losing an old and valued official by the retirement of Mr. Gadsby,
who for thirty-one years has had charge of the railway station and the control
of the traffic to and fro. During this long period Mr. Gadsby has watched
Desborough grow from a small insignificant village into a large commercial
centre with a population of probably 5,000 people, and it has been a hobby of
his after fulfilling his duties to the travelling and trading public to interest
himself in the affairs of the town in a very large degree. How much that was
appreciated by the people was shown by the fact that he was made first chairman
of the Urban Council which conferred the honour of a J.P.ship upon him. Mr.
Gadsby is settling down in Desborough, so that he may still continue to take an
active part in the public life of the place. His successor at the station is
Mr. Orchard, of
Wellingborough, a former stationmaster at Finedon, who for the last year or two
has acted as an assistant inspector.
