Frederick Nursey was born in Desborough about 1856. He was initially surnamed Rowlett, but he and 4 other siblings were born after his mother Sarah Rowlett, nee Tomkins, was widowed in 1853. By the 1871 census Sarah was housekeeper to widower William Nursey. Sarah and William married in 1872 and by the following census Sarah's younger children were surnamed Nursey. They may have been William's children or they may just have taken his surname, not unusual after a widow remarried.

After his army service Frederick married Lucy Nursey. Lucy was his cousin, the daughter of Sarah's elder sister Rebecca and her second husband Samuel Nursey.

The statement of services shows that Frederick was convicted of a Felony by the civil powers (not stated what the felony was) and imprisoned for 3 months. Later he was incarcerated at the military prison at Horton in Hampshire (see '81 census) for what looks like 'quitting the guard'.
